Gifts for Mom
The earliest references to celebrating Mother’s Day date back to ancient Greece, where the arrival of spring was honored in tribute to “Rhea,” the mother of the gods. In the ancient Roman Empire, “Matronalia” was celebrated at the beginning of March, with three days dedicated to “Cybele,” the mother of all gods.
However, it was Anna Jarvis, a university professor in the United States, who after losing her mother, wrote to religious institutions, merchants, and political leaders proposing the creation of a day to honor mothers. Her wish became reality when the U.S. Congress established Mother’s Day, to be celebrated on the second Sunday of May, with the first official celebration taking place on May 9, 1914.
In Portugal, this day is celebrated on the first Sunday of May, as it also coincides with the celebration of Our Lady of Fátima.
Mother’s Day is approaching, and as tradition goes, it is a day when we offer something special to our mothers, as each one is unique and deserves to be reminded of how much she is loved.
